Petition to President George W. Bush
and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
The crisis in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians is serious and requires our best efforts to bring stability and peace to the region. However, we do not believe that appeasing terrorists at the cost of endangering Israel is the answer. Furthermore, by appeasing terrorists in the Middle East in order to achieve an illusionary “peace,” America sends a clear and dangerous signal to terrorists everywhere that terrorism will be rewarded. We believe that the proposed Mideast peace conference is a futile attempt to craft a lasting peace and therefore should be cancelled.
We believe that no lasting peace can be achieved so long as the Palestinian Authority refuses to recognize the right of Israel to exist. How can two parties come together in agreement when one of the parties doesn’t recognize the right of the other party to exist?
We believe that no lasting peace can be achieved so long as the Palestinian Authority continues to support terrorism and refuses to dismantle its terrorist infrastructure. How can Israel be expected to compromise with those who refuse to renounce terrorism aimed at the people of Israel?
We believe it should be clear by now that good-faith efforts by Israel to trade “land for peace,” as it did when it gave up Gaza, have always been and will always be met with violence and more demands from the Palestinian Authority, while the Palestinian Authority refuses to even recognize the right of Israel to exist.
We believe that demands by the Palestinian Authority for more land concessions by Israel threaten the safety and security of Israel and, given the track record of the Palestinian Authority, will once again fail to achieve a lasting peace.
We are strongly opposed to dividing Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, and believe Israel should not be pressured to make such a concession in return for more empty promises from the Palestinian Authority.
We believe that the recent assassination threat leveled against Israeli Prime Minister Olmert by members of the Palestinian presidential security detail demonstrates the complete lack of good faith on the part of the Palestinian Authority.
Therefore, for all of these reasons, we the undersigned strongly urge you to cancel the proposed Mideast peace conference, scheduled to take place in Annapolis, Maryland, before the end of the year. We believe that we must not sacrifice moral clarity on the altar of moral equivalency. The Palestinian Authority must be held accountable for its actions and we should not reward terrorism with appeasement.
