KIRKUK - Iraqi Police (IP) uncovered a major weapons cache in Kirkuk province, Dec. 18. The discovery was made during a series of pre-dawn raids at suspected cache sites. The operation was led by the IP into the town of Ruwadah, approximately 25 miles west of Kirkuk city. The operation was named "Kura Azakan" (The Brave Men) by Gen. Sarhadt, outer Hawijah District police chief, because Coalition forces and IP had not been in the area recently and because the IP had gone in without Coalition presence. [...]

BAGHDAD - Multi-National Division - Baghdad Soldiers arrested an alleged terrorist technical advisor and an improvised explosive device cell leader during two raids in the Doura neighborhoods in the Rashid District Dec. 17. [...]

BAGHDAD - Iraqi Security Volunteers arrested a suspected al-Qaeda operative and handed him to the 'Warriors' of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Inf. Div., attached to Task Force Dragon Dec. 18 in Doura.

In a separate incident, Multi-National Division - Baghdad Soldiers arrested an alleged member of an anti-aircraft cell in the Doura neighborhood of the Rashid District Dec. 17.

Soldiers from Troop B, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division arrested the man who is believed to be a member of an anti-aircraft cell after receiving a tip the suspected terrorist from Arab Jabor was in their area of operations.

Both suspected terrorists were taken to a Coalition Forces detention facility for further questioning.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Coalition forces detained two wanted individuals and four additional suspects during operations today targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq. [...]

FORWARD OPERATING BASE ISKANDARIYAH, Iraq - Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces recently took ground in North Babil previously occupied by al-Qaeda in Iraq and began establishing a new patrol base there Dec. 16.

WASHINGTON - Iraqi and Coalition forces killed one suspected terrorist and detained 24 others in Iraq over the past two days, military officials said.

During operations to disrupt criminal networks Friday, Coalition forces captured two suspected "special groups" leaders and detained three other suspects near Baghdad in the Mashru and Kadhimiya areas. Intelligence led ground forces to the target area south of Baghdad in Mashru, where they captured one criminal group leader and detained another suspected criminal. [...]

Tell Code Stupid That The Terrorists Need More Money

TARMIYAH, Iraq – Coalition Force Soldiers discovered and destroyed one of the largest weapons caches found in the Salah ad Din Province in the last 15 months Oct. 18.

CF discovered five weapons caches which contained approximately 41,000 pounds of explosives as well as 35 projectiles west of Tarmiya.

The caches were then destroyed by EOD without any additional damage or any casualties.

The fifth cache alone contained 300 separate bags of homemade explosives, each weighing 100 lbs. The crater from the blast measured 100 feet wide, 100 feet long and 30 feet deep.

“A discovery of this magnitude deals a crippling blow to the enemy,” said Col. Bryan Owens, commander, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. “We will continue to do what is necessary to take weapons from the enemy and provide peace for the Iraqi people.”

The caches were initially discovered by a Coalition Forces helicopter in the area.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed an al-Qaeda in Iraq military advisor during an operation Aug. 31 west of Tarmiyah.

Coalition forces conducted a precision operation west of Tarmiyah Aug. 31. The assault force followed a vehicle containing two suspected terrorists and attempted to get the driver to stop. When the driver resisted capture, the assault force fired on the vehicle. Both the driver and the passenger were killed in the operation. Coalition forces later identified one of the men as Abu Yaqub al-Masri.

Al-Masri, who is also known as Zakkariya or Doctor, was a military advisor to al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders in Baghdad and the surrounding belts. He provided guidance and direction for attack planning, coordination and execution.

Intelligence reports indicate al-Masri was directed by senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders to plan attacks that would cultivate sectarian strife. The former al-Qaeda in Iraq military emir of Baghdad, now detained by Coalition forces, described al-Masri as director of the “car bomb division.”

Al-Masri was one of the primary architects behind the Nov. 26 car bombings in Sadr City that killed 181 Iraqi civilians and injured another 247. He also planned major attacks on the bridges in the Rusafa area to isolate the Shi’ite population there.

Al-Masri previously fought against Coalition forces in Afghanistan and is linked to several senior leaders of al-Qaeda. He was allied with Dr. Ayman Zawahiri, bin Laden’s second-in-command. He was also close to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the former leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq killed in a Coalition air strike in June 2006.

“Coalition operations are disrupting and destroying al-Qaeda’s terrorist networks,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesperson. “There is nowhere to hide.”

Commando air assault detains suspected insurgent disguised as pregnant woman

AL-OWESAT, Iraq — Soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 14th infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) out of Fort Drum, N.Y., detained several men during an air assault mission along the Euphrates River, Aug. 20.

One of the men detained was dressed as a pregnant woman.

Crimson Shogun was an operation targeting al-Qaeda-allied terrorist networks in the Owesat and Fetoah areas along the river and brought together more than 100 Soldiers of 2-14 Inf., 50 Iraqi army troops and two local residents who volunteered to help identify terrorists.

Thirteen men were detained for further questioning, one of whom was on the battalion’s list of persons of interest. His brother was also detained, and was found by the Soldiers of Company A disguised as a pregnant woman in an attempt to avoid capture.

The top target for al Qaeda in Iraq[*] south of Baghdad was killed July 14 in Arab Jabour by precision-guided munitions, the Excalibur.

Shortly after 12 p.m., 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, received a call that Abu Jurah and 14 anti-Iraqi forces were meeting at a house in Arab Jabour.

Abu Jurah was an AQI cell leader and was responsible for improvised explosive devices, vehicle-borne IED and indirect fire attacks on Coalition Forces in Arab Jabour.

At approximately 1:12 p.m., the house was positively identified allowing 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Regiment to fire two Excalibur rounds destroying the meeting house.

An unmanned aerial vehicle observed persons leaving the house, loading injured individuals into a sedan and fleeing the scene.

An AH-64 Apache helicopter engaged the sedan destroying it.

Three people were observed running from the meeting house to a nearby house.

A U.S. Air Force F16 Fighting Falcon dropped two 500-pound GPS-guided bombs on the second house.

Quips Mike: "If there were any survivors they would probably have finished them off with a giant anvil."

Outposts: Good For Our Success and Bad News For The Enemy

Baghdad Security Plan Seeing Many Successes By Melinda L. Larson American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, April 8, 2007 – The success of combat outposts and joint security stations within the Baghdad area have been so successful that there is talk of increasing the number of combined Iraqi and coalition force stations, according to U.S. Army Maj. Gen. William Caldwell IV, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman. Fifty-four of the 75 outposts and stations are operating in the capital, and the number could rise to 102, Caldwell said today during a combined press briefing in Baghdad with Iraqi Army Brig. Gen Qassim Atta, spokesman for the Baghdad Security Plan. “Together we are making progress but it’s going to take time. I can see it and I can feel it on the streets,” Caldwell said. The dynamics within the capital have changed since the Baghdad Security Plan began Feb. 13. The plan called Fardh al-Qanoon, an Iraqi phrase that means “Enforcing the Law,” includes initiatives to split Baghdad into 10 districts and create joint security stations in the capital city. “There are more Iraqi security forces along with coalition forces out on the streets who are living out there now. They have proven very successful in providing much greater security,” Caldwell said. Caldwell quantified the statement by adding there’s been a 26 percent decline in the number of murders and executions in Baghdad between the month of February and March, and a 60 percent reduction during the last week of March and the first week of April. Caldwell cautioned that it is not yet a trend. “We’re very encouraged by that positive sign but it does not mean we’ve achieved an end state yet. We still have a long way to go and that has to be sustained over a long period of time to really change the dynamics,” he said Caldwell made it clear the last of five brigades scheduled to arrive for operation Fardh al-Qanoon won’t be in place until June. “We’re still at the beginning of this plan,” he added. With the security plan placing Iraqi and coalition forces in the neighborhoods, it means they are more accessible to citizens and that has brought another success, he said. “We’re working toward building contact with the people and that is going to lead to confidence building,” Caldwell said. “The amount of tips that have started to come in from Iraqi citizens has gone up exponentially over the past couple of weeks because the people are starting to develop the trust and confidence in knowing that the security forces will respond to them when they call.” Some of the security stations have set up phone numbers so calls can be taken directly at the station and forces can react more quickly, he added. In addition to engaging the citizens of Iraq with local security forces, a free press is also critical to the country, Caldwell said. A recently opened radio and television station in the volatile Diyala province northeast of Baghdad means citizens can be informed. “The opening of the radio and television station in Diyala was a major step forward,” Caldwell said. “There’s now the ability for the Iraqi press to talk with and engage with the people up there. That’s another important aspect because ultimately the solution for anything here is not just the military, it only sets the conditions to allow for a political solution.” Caldwell also took a moment to thank the press for their contributions. “I appreciate the risks that you take and the sacrifices you make on a daily basis,” he told the reporters at the briefing. “A free press is absolutely essential if we’re going to keep the Iraqi people informed as to what’s going on. Thank you for your service to your country and what you do for your people.”
