Whitewashing The American Indian

At the Plimoth Plantation this year they're laying down some rules.

(CNSNews.com) – A nine-year-old girl was recently asked to remove her “Indian” costume before entering the Wampanoag Homesite of the Plimoth Plantation, a historical site that allows visitors to experience Plymouth, Mass., as it was in the 17th century.

The nine-year-old was one of thousands who flock to the colonial museum during the Thanksgiving season. She dressed as an Indian and her friend dressed as a pilgrim to celebrate the occasion.

Linda Coombs, associate director of the Wampanoag Indigenous Program, asked the girl to remove her homemade beaded costume before visiting the site, reducing the child to tears and upsetting her mother, the Boston Globe reported on Nov. 24.

“Native people find it offensive when they see a non-native person dressed up and playing Indian. It’s perceived as us being made fun of,” Coombs told CNS News.com.

“Costumes are offensive because of what has happened in history – the Hollywood pseudo Indians, the Italian actors playing Indians, the crappy dress they put them in, the Halloween costumes. When other people dress up as Native people it’s offensive, period,” Coombs said.

She compared people wearing Native American costumes to white entertainers who put on blackface in old minstrel shows.

Visitors to the Wampanoag home site are asked not only to refrain from dressing up like “Indians” – they are asked not to use words like “how” or “chief” or “squaw.”

Cultural sensitivity requests are posted on signs in front of the museum and on their Web site, plimoth.org.

The Web site also advises visitors not to refer to the Wampanoag people as either Indians or Native Americans. “The term Native American suggests that Native People were always American but this country was populated by Native People long before it was called America,” the site states.

Instead, they prefer to be called Native People or Indigenous People.

Guests are asked not to engage in stereotypical “Indian” behavior, such as war-whooping and dancing around the fire.

The museum also requests that people not ask questions like, “Are you a real Indian?” Not just because of the word “Indian,” but because of the world “real.”

“The tour guides here are real people, Native people. Our nationalities are not fodder for joke material, because then you get into the aspect of racism and historical erasure,” Coombs said.

Most people have no idea that what they say or wear might be hurtful, insulting or offensive, she said.

“That’s why we’re trying to educate people about our culture and to correct stereotypes and wrong information,” she said. “We’re here to make a bridge between people, not to just send them packing.”

The movement to ban Indian imagery from sports teams and mascots, from dressing up at school or at Halloween as a noble savage, or banning words that might offend the sensitive nature of native Americans is what I'd expect of those who are trying to eradicate any memory of the stone age culture Europeans found on America's shores. Consider this - No one walks around in a Nazi uniform or in the striped rags of a Holocaust survivor because it is universally accepted that there is nothing redeeming in either symbol, they're both considered representations of evil and tragedy, respectively. Any nine year old wearing a costume resembling either would be forced into lifelong counseling and Child Protective Service agents sent to their homes. Would a Nazi interpret the sight of a child dressed in a Nazi costume as an insult? Or would he see it as honoring Nazism simply because the child chose to wear it in public despite the public condemnation? Likewise a Holocaust survivor? There is no doubt that Indian activists like Linda Coombs want America to interpret the relationship between the Pilgrims and the Indians as the same between the Nazis and their victims - but there is no comparison, and certainly no collective acceptance of that interpretation. There was no Holocaust, and no genocide. There's no consensus that Indians represent anything other than courage and wisdom, and to many, victims. Americans honor Indians when they name their sports teams after them, or don costumes, or appeal to native virtues ascribed to Indians. If anything, popular culture has whitewashed the nature of the Indian.

The brutality of Indians began long before European adventurers arrived, when Indians murdered, raped and enslaved other Indians in a long and wide ranging 'civil' war that raged on the continent. In the clash of civilizations that ensued after settlers arrived here, who started the atrocities matters little - the horrors made real were committed by both sides. That we've made native Americans into passive, nature worshiping environmentalists preaching respect and love is a concoction that couldn't be applied to anything remotely human. It was done by modern Americans to patronize and idealize the natives so they could serve as political props in a movement seeking to entrench multiculturalism. Re-writing history to suit the vanquished is as bad as re-writing history to glory in the deeds of the victors; the truth becomes the victim of self-serving interests.

But since we're in an age that takes serious the exercise of both demanding freedom of expression and then using political correctness to ban such a thing, any proactive step to protect ourselves from untoward words, glances or insinuations should be a burden shared by all. So I've got a few demands of my own that I'd appreciate all Indians abide by from now on when I'm within their circle of influence. I'm not a white guy - I'm an Irish, German American who assumes a fine bronze color in the California sun. Being Irish, any mention of the "potato" brings bursting from my subconscious a repulsive cultural memory of the famine that propelled my family from those emerald shores, so don't mention it. Please also refrain from the wearing or mentioning of "lederhosen" around me as well - my legs are not as muscular as they once were, and the imposition of that word thrown at me destroys any vestige of self-esteem that the German beer I'm guzzling might have lent me. Of course, dressing in green, cursing while drunk and bragging about the size of your Bierschinkin may send me into a tearful rendition of "Danny Boy" that will make everybody cry.

You've insulted me long enough, and I'm finding it tougher not to take it personally. Now it's my turn to play the victim.

On a blog post at Wake Up America, there were some comments made by an individual that has succumbed to the evil doctrines of the above mentioned. The post was inspired by a member of our group, Patriots For Conservative Values, and the original post can be found here.

There was some heated debate over someone said that someone said that someone said one thing or another and it boils down to the inflamed rhetoric of the Leftinistra in regards to some folks thinking other folks are inferior. As I read the debate as it unfolded, I could smell the fur burning and then the bomb hit...all men were created equal. Whereas this may be true, it doesn't mean that it is absolute. As the saying goes, some are more equal than others. It all depends on your outlook on life and what one's standards are.

I believe all "men" start out as equals. Egos play a major part in one's life. Greed plays a part in one's life. Self-centeredness plays a major part in one's life. Selfishness and ideologies plays a major part in one's life. Geography plays a major role in one's life. This list could go on and on and on.

Some things are acceptable to some people and are totally rejected by others. Why? Are we all not "equal". The "why can't we all get along" is an erroneous concept and reeks of wishful thinking or as my Dad says...Stinkin' Thinkin'. We will NEVER all get along because we all believe in certain things that others do not.

As for this particular "debate" at the Wake Up America thread, the ill-gotten belief that certain people believe others are inferior and the reasons thereof are flawed from the start.

As I read the debate, I stayed out of it, casually thinking and rethinking my personal stand on who and/or what I believe to be inferior. My comments were as follows, after I had had enough of Multiculturalistic buffoonery and Identity Politics silliness.

Those that espouse the destruction/murder of "innocents" primarily the unarmed, then those INFERIOR in intellectual honesty are indeed INFERIOR to all that is honest, decent and upright.

One cannot negotiate with a rabid raccoon.

We tried to "negotiate" terms during a mission that had gone south. They saw it as a weakness and came at us thinking we were "inferior" to them.

We were negotiating THEIR surrender.

We lived.

They died where they stood.

The people we are fighting ARE INFERIOR in all aspect and regards. This doesn't mean that they are stupid.

They are filled with hate. This makes them INFERIOR.

They murder unarmed innocents. This makes them INFERIOR.

They brutalize ALL that go against their ideology. This makes them animalistic, ergo, INFERIOR.

One can paint a turd a pretty color but in the end, all you have is a pretty turd.

The individual that charged another individual of calling others "inferior" started this ball rolling and the charge was unqualified in that it was an injected "opinion" that another thought someone else had said...go read the thread to see for yourself.

The following is the statement that another took issue with, having fallen for the Leftinistra mantra of, again, the above mentioned blights on American Culture and Society:

Do you see the word "inferior" in there? I didn't think so.

The ultimate comment was made by yet another of our group, Ben. Ben is one of our resident scholars in regards to the Jihadim and so is Dean. Listen to Ben's comment:

Islam has no equivalent concept. To Islam, Arabs are the best of peoples and Quraysh are the best of tribes. According to Muhammad and his first two Caliphs, the Caliph must come from the Quraysh tribe.

Most Muslims are Asian, not Arabian and are Muslim because their ancestors were conquered by Arabs and forcibly converted. Arabs imposed their culture on the conquered Asians, Africans & Europeans. Why do you think Arabic names are common in Croatia, Bosnia & Serbia?

The genius of the American system is freedom: the right to be free from coercion; coercion adnumerum as well as by force. Neither tyrant nor mob rule but limited government within set bounds.

We are in danger of losing our hard won freedom to an institution that seeks to kill or subjugate us and confiscate our property. It seeks to conquer us by violence, deception, subversion & demographics.

They seized a school in Russia and killed about 170 children, numerous parents, grand parents and teachers. They planted bombs in schools under construction in Iraq. They practiced seizing buses in Iraq and several training here in America. They obtained blue prints and security plans for several American schools. This summer, school buses were stolen in Texas.

Now comes this series of bomb threats. But Liberals can't connect the dots. They must learn the hard way, as Neville Chamberlain learned about Nazism.

When the terrorists strike it won't be just Liberal's kids being slain; the children of Moderates and Conservatives will suffer with them. Then it will be too late. There will be nothing we can do about it.

This whole Goddamn deal is not about grievances, real nor imagined. It ain't about our foreign policy. It ain't about our economic or social habits. Its about the Goddamn doctrines of Islam as established by the Quran in Surat 8,9,33,47,48 & 61. Its about the curseworthy actions of Islam's exemplar: Muhammad as recorded in the traditions of his companions which confirm the damnable doctrines enshrined in 8:12, 8:39, 8:67, 9:29, 33:26-27 and 59:2. You can read about them in the books of Jihad, Expedition or Khumus in any of the several Hadith collections.

In the short term, our safety requires removing Muslims from the homeland and preventing other Muslims from entering. Thats right, I said deport them!!! In the case of citizens, give each one a polygraph and ask for their consent to or denunciation of the damnable doctrines of Jihad, genocide and terror above referenced. If they can't pass a polygraph while renouncing those doctrines, then rescind their citizenship and deport them.

In the long term, our safety depends on the extinction of Islam.

Islam does not quit. Unlike Christianity, which had a Reformation, Islam will never cease from troubling. It has been engaged upon Jihad for 1384 years. Its demonic mandate to conquer the world causes it to persist until it succeeds or becomes extinct.

In the mid term, we need to confront Islam head on with an extensive and intensive global media campaign exposing its core doctrines & practices. That is the way to plant the seeds of doubt & introspection which can blossom into apostasy.

Finally, it will be necessary to use military force to eliminate the recalcitrant die hards.

Short of Reformation, which is impossible, Extinction is our only long term option.

And THAT is the God's honest truth right there. He did NOT say the extinction of all Muslims. He said Islam. Thin line? Perhaps, yet, there is a distinction and if one misses that, it is their bad and not "ours".

The Why of the current War is simple yet the Leftinistra try to make into something which it is not. The Troofers are the extreme elements of the Leftinistra as are the Ron Paul brigades, ANSWER, Code Pinko Skanks, MoveOn and other subversive groups. They don't get it...that is the rank and file don't get it. Every single Upper Echelon elements of said organizations are known Communists and they have been outed many, many times. Diversity…the Forgotten Evil

City Journal: (uh oh! shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! don’t tell the leftinistra)

Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone, is very nervous about releasing his new research, and understandably so. His five-year study shows that immigration and ethnic diversity have a devastating short- and medium-term influence on the social capital, fabric of associations, trust, and neighborliness that create and sustain communities. He fears that his work on the surprisingly negative effects of diversity will become part of the immigration debate, even though he finds that in the long run, people do forge new communities and new ties.

Putnam’s study reveals that immigration and diversity not only reduce social capital between ethnic groups, but also within the groups themselves. Trust, even for members of one’s own race, is lower, altruism and community cooperation rarer, friendships fewer. The problem isn’t ethnic conflict or troubled racial relations, but withdrawal and isolation. Putnam writes: “In colloquial language, people living in ethnically diverse settings appear to ‘hunker down’-that is, to pull in like a turtle.”

In the 41 sites Putnam studied in the U.S., he found that the more diverse the neighborhood, the less residents trust neighbors. This proved true in communities large and small, from big cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Boston to tiny Yakima, Washington, rural South Dakota, and the mountains of West Virginia. In diverse San Francisco and Los Angeles, about 30 percent of people say that they trust neighbors a lot. In ethnically homogeneous communities in the Dakotas, the figure is 70 percent to 80 percent.

Diversity does not produce “bad race relations,” Putnam says. Rather, people in diverse communities tend “to withdraw even from close friends, to expect the worst from their community and its leaders, to volunteer less, give less to charity and work on community projects less often, to register to vote less, to agitate for social reform more, but have less faith that they can actually make a difference, and to huddle unhappily in front of the television.” Putnam adds a crushing footnote: his findings “may underestimate the real effect of diversity on social withdrawal.”

Neither age nor disparities of wealth explain this result. “Americans raised in the 1970s,” he writes, “seem fully as unnerved by diversity as those raised in the 1920s.” And the “hunkering down” occurred no matter whether the communities were relatively egalitarian or showed great differences in personal income. Even when communities are equally poor or rich, equally safe or crime-ridden, diversity correlates with less trust of neighbors, lower confidence in local politicians and news media, less charitable giving and volunteering, fewer close friends, and less happiness.

Putnam has long been aware that his findings could have a big effect on the immigration debate. Last October, he told the Financial Times that “he had delayed publishing his research until he could develop proposals to compensate for the negative effects of diversity.” He said it “would have been irresponsible to publish without that,” a quote that should raise eyebrows. Academics aren’t supposed to withhold negative data until they can suggest antidotes to their findings.

Nor has Putnam made details of his study available for examination by peers and the public. So far, he has published only an initial summary of his findings, from a speech he gave after winning an award in Sweden, in the June issue of Scandinavian Political Studies. His office said Putnam is in Britain, working on a religion project at the University of Manchester, and is currently too busy to grant an interview.

Putnam’s study does make two positive points: in the long run, increased immigration and diversity are inevitable and desirable, and successful immigrant societies “dampen the negative effects of diversity” by constructing new identities. Social psychologists have long favored the optimistic hypothesis that contact between different ethnic and racial groups increases tolerance and social solidarity. For instance, white soldiers assigned to units with black soldiers after World War II were more relaxed about desegregation of the army than were soldiers in all-white units. But Putnam acknowledges that most empirical studies do not support the “contact hypothesis.” In general, they find that the more people are brought into contact with those of another race or ethnicity, the more they stick to their own, and the less they trust others. Putnam writes: “Across local areas in the United States, Australia, Sweden Canada and Britain, greater ethnic diversity is associated with lower social trust and, at least in some cases, lower investment in public goods.”

Though Putnam is wary of what right-wing politicians might do with his findings, the data might give pause to those on the left, and in the center as well. If he’s right, heavy immigration will inflict social deterioration for decades to come, harming immigrants as well as the native-born. Putnam is hopeful that eventually America will forge a new solidarity based on a “new, broader sense of we.” The problem is how to do that in an era of multiculturalism and disdain for assimilation.
