But there is hope for Democrats. Both the Marine Times and the London Daily Telegraph report that the Iraqi prime minister wants President Bush to recall Gen. David Petraeus. The Telegraph reported:Gen Petraeus admitted that the relationship was stormy, saying: “We have not pulled punches with each other.”
Bush will fire Petraeus right after the Tampa Bay Devil Rays win the pennant.

Maybe if the Prime Minister of Iraq doesn't like our commanding general in Iraq and wants us to stop arming Sunni groups, but the US government thinks our commanding general is a smart guy and we want to intensify the arming of Sunni groups that we ought to step back, take a deep breath, and decide to leave Iraq to the Iraqis.
Tonight, the AP reports that Gen. David Petraeus and Amb. Ryan Crocker have been taking Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki out to the woodshed a bit. And apparently, as you might imagine for a grown man who's a head of state, Maliki's not exactly pleased with the thumping he's been getting from the two top U.S. officials in Iraq. According to the AP:Here is the bottom line. Maliki needs to STFU and get over himself. He has had LOTS and LOTS of time and hasn't produced. He needs to stop whining. GWB told him no. End of story.

Tunisian Poet and Civil Rights Activist Basit Bin Hasan on Suicide Bombers Who Attack Funeral Processions
In a July 13, 2007 article on the liberal Arab website Al-Awan, Tunisian poet Basit Bin Hasan, who is a former director of the Tunis-based Arab Institute for Human Rights, wrote that for some in Arab society killing had become a goal unto itself, and that in order to fight the phenomenon of suicide bombings and other manifestations of disregard for human life, Arab societies must overcome their "moral indolence" and reconsider the meaning of life and death.
The following are excerpts from the article:(1)
"The Killing of Humans with Cold, Organized Violence Has Become a Goal Unto Itself"
"This is going on in Iraq, and in places closer to us than we imagine: suicide bombers are targeting the funeral processions of people who were themselves victims of previous suicide attacks.
"In one single motion, and with rare determination, they blow up their own bodies amidst the bodies of the living and the bodies of the dead. In these attacks they are targeting not [only] the areas of life; they are targeting as well the area that separates life from the afterlife – the time of death and mourning. In this kind of suicide, they have united the killing of the living with the killing of the dead.
"They impair our moral conceptions of life and death, and open the gates to a 'new' time – a time of nothingness, in which suicide attacks turn into an absolute and uninterrupted trajectory, divorced from historical goals, and in which the killing of humans with cold, organized violence becomes a goal unto itself.
"Thus the killing of the living and the dead in suicide attacks targeting funeral processions is a frightening phenomenon that boggles the mind, and which, at this point in history, calls for penetrating intellectual and moral attention."
Our Intellectuals Have Recourse to a Logic of Perpetual Justification of Suicide Attacks
"Is life worth living? Is the goal of life to propagate new and different lives and to attain a form of collective happiness in the world of men? Or is the worth of man the destruction of humanity through the destruction of himself and others? And what is the place of death in the path to recognition of the importance of life?
"Many philosophies, both ancient and modern, have attempted to consider politics through these fundamental ethical questions, [but] our intellectuals are expert in ignoring them and marginalizing them. They have persisted in their feeble and monotonous discussions of suicide attacks and in having recourse to the logic of perpetual justification and tolerance for the intolerable.
"At times, they base themselves on an absolute concept of 'resistance,' without any profound reflection on the multiple meanings of this concept and its historical specificity; at other times, they base themselves on the fact that there is no clear and internationally accepted definition of terrorism... as though the absence of a definition for any given phenomenon can permit opening the gates of moral meaninglessness..."
"The Demon in Man Has Escaped From Its Bottle"
"The Arab intellectuals who have defended suicide attacks, whether openly, or through sly and cunning rhetoric, by describing them as an absolute right that aims to achieve political goals, have not only taken part in justifying crimes of destruction against living beings; they have also contributed in keeping [the question of] the meaning of life and death in our societies from being raised.
"The justification of suicide attacks by intellectuals, who are considered authorities, and through the authority of language and the media, has opened gates of fear that will not be shut before our societies are brought to experience the meaning of nothingness and obliteration in their absolute forms.
"[Now] everyone can kill or be killed: the 'resisting' suicide attacker, who has moved on from killing the enemy to killing all; the extremist politician, who has moved on from fighting he who differs from him politically to killing the society that differs from him; people who kill [other] people frantically attempting to face up to tragedies of life and [its] narrow straits; and the state, over which there is no supervision, and which has established a system to lay siege to all and to murder them, in institutions that monitor daily life.
"Thus the demon in man has escaped from its bottle, and everything has become possible. The human body, which used to be ruled by a biological memory that defined the path from birth to death, and by a moral memory that defined the meaning of its experience in existence, has been left in complete nakedness. It has become a body without memory, sufficient unto itself, no longer to struggle for the rule of memory and to plunge into the risks of life, but which rather [exists] in order to destroy itself and others. Destruction has become the life of the body and the meaninglessness that denies the meaning of life and death.
"Today we see that the suicide attacks, which our intellectuals imagined were a temporary means to achieve political benefit, have turned into a fixed institution of their own, with their own particular logic, which is the death of all logic.
"The number of these attacks has risen in a number of our countries, and their forms and methods have become varied. Men and women throw their exploding bodies into armies armed with the latest achievements of destructive weapons technology. Children and youth are led by adults to places where they will kill themselves and kill others. Unexpected suicide bombings hit cafes, hotels, restaurants, engagement parties, government institutions, the media, mosques, churches, and means of transport.
"Now, the attacks are, by striking funeral processions, searching out regions that we naively imagined were unassailable.... [But] some sons of our societies have transgressed all boundaries and have written in the ink of their corpses the dreadful book of nothingness.
"The Objectification of the Self and the Other... Is What Makes Any Crime Permissible"
"The objectification of the self and the other, and the stripping of beings from their humanity, is what makes any crime permissible, no matter how hideous or absurd.
"The suicide attackers have, in this great act of objectification, turned into new gods with absolute control over life and death. These black gods, who have lost their ties to history, decide, through the killing of their bodies which no longer mean anything to them, when and how the lives of others will come to an end.
"We are no longer just facing extremists motivated by political and religious goals. We have entered a phase in which the narcissist suicide attackers have gone beyond Islamic conceptions of life and death.
"The phenomenon of increasing suicide attacks and the steadily multiplying groups of suicide bombers is a historic predicament that raises grave questions as to the extent of our dealing morally and responsibly with issues of life and death in our societies.
"Enough of This Destructive Insanity"
"Faced with the phenomenon of absolute killing and violence that are sweeping our societies, some are still repeating that there are limits to the nothingness surrounding us, and that our desire to [survive] will... stop the collapse, and that an absolute conscience will arise from our dark reality and say 'enough of this destructive insanity,' and will bring back society's desire for life...
"The destructive tendency to which the suicide attacks have led us... is one among a number of other manifestations that have taken root in our societies and that are no less frightening...
"These manifestations, and others [like them], are just lead-ins to a greater worry that has settled into what we call our lives – a worry over an uncertain future, and a worry over our inability to define the forces that rule our fates and decide [matters of] our life and death.

Conservative Tsunami Is Rising...Ride The Wave

Dear Republican,
The eight most recent public polls show the President's job approval is rising while approval of Congress is plummeting. The four polls that measured job approval for both the President and Congress show the President's ratings are higher. Surveys show Americans give high marks to the economy and that the GOP is regaining its lead on taxes while voters reject Congressional Democrats on earmarks and pork.
Polls show that on Iraq, voters reject Democrats' calls for immediate withdrawal, clearly recognize the consequences of defeat, and are waiting for General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker to report in September.
As voters see signs that the surge is working in Baghdad and Anbar, optimism is increasing with more people believing the war was the right thing to do and that the war is going better. The more people see the clear differences between the policies of Republicans and Democrats, the stronger our position.
On Iraq, Republicans want decisions made on recommendations of our military commanders based on conditions on the ground. Democrats seem to pay more attention to the strategic judgments of MoveOn.Org, Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore than they do our military commanders in battle.
Republicans have offered a plan to balance the budget by freezing growth in discretionary domestic spending to less than 1% and with no tax increases, resulting in a surplus by 2012. Democrats want $205 billion more in spending over the next five years and the largest tax increase in history.
Republicans are working hard to confirm judges who will uphold the Constitution by strictly interpreting the law. Democrats have fallen into their old pattern of obstruction, delay and opposition to the highly qualified conservative judicial candidate the President has nominated.
Republicans are working to make certain the nearly 700,000 poor children not covered by the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) get health care coverage, supporting a 20% in funding for SCHIP. Democrats want a 140% increase in spending to move children and families with private health insurance onto government-run health care and would shift the focus from poor children to adults with incomes of up to $83,000 a year. Having failed to have the Federal government take over the health care system all at once, Democrats are now holding approval of SCHIP hostage so they can begin having Washington take control of your health care one big chunk at a time.
August represents an excellent opportunity to continue highlighting these differences and to build on our momentum as Americans come to understand the big differences between the parties in policies that affect our lives and the failure of the Reid-Pelosi led Congress.

Further, Our blog talk radio show has a bevy of high profile commitments that will simply knock your socks off. Far from being down from the count, we are stronger than ever and crushing our enemies beneath our chariot wheels.
Bragging?Not at all. It's not about us, it's about you, our fans and subscribers. Oh, don't get me wrong, we are ecstatic about the growth, but YOU made it happen. YOU have the power. Don't ever forget that. YOU showed up in 27 States to support our troops at the largest pro-troops rally in American history. Though, my past disagreements with some members of that organization are well known, it does not change the fact. YOU made it happen.
YOU brought down a horrid immigration bill and YOU brought pressure to bear that lead to the clemency showed Scooter Libby. YOU can help US change the course of American history by putting down these anti-war pansies and reinvigorating support for this noble, honorable mission.
Most of all, YOU can help US show Pelosi and Reid the door and make sure her evilness Hitlery and her heir apparent Obama Bin Laden never get a sniff of the White House.

Dear Republican,
The eight most recent public polls show the President's job approval is rising while approval of Congress is plummeting. The four polls that measured job approval for both the President and Congress show the President's ratings are higher. Surveys show Americans give high marks to the economy and that the GOP is regaining its lead on taxes while voters reject Congressional Democrats on earmarks and pork.
Polls show that on Iraq, voters reject Democrats' calls for immediate withdrawal, clearly recognize the consequences of defeat, and are waiting for General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker to report in September.
As voters see signs that the surge is working in Baghdad and Anbar, optimism is increasing with more people believing the war was the right thing to do and that the war is going better. The more people see the clear differences between the policies of Republicans and Democrats, the stronger our position.
On Iraq, Republicans want decisions made on recommendations of our military commanders based on conditions on the ground. Democrats seem to pay more attention to the strategic judgments of MoveOn.Org, Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore than they do our military commanders in battle.
Republicans have offered a plan to balance the budget by freezing growth in discretionary domestic spending to less than 1% and with no tax increases, resulting in a surplus by 2012. Democrats want $205 billion more in spending over the next five years and the largest tax increase in history.
Republicans are working hard to confirm judges who will uphold the Constitution by strictly interpreting the law. Democrats have fallen into their old pattern of obstruction, delay and opposition to the highly qualified conservative judicial candidate the President has nominated.
Republicans are working to make certain the nearly 700,000 poor children not covered by the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) get health care coverage, supporting a 20% in funding for SCHIP. Democrats want a 140% increase in spending to move children and families with private health insurance onto government-run health care and would shift the focus from poor children to adults with incomes of up to $83,000 a year. Having failed to have the Federal government take over the health care system all at once, Democrats are now holding approval of SCHIP hostage so they can begin having Washington take control of your health care one big chunk at a time.
August represents an excellent opportunity to continue highlighting these differences and to build on our momentum as Americans come to understand the big differences between the parties in policies that affect our lives and the failure of the Reid-Pelosi led Congress.

Cindy Sheehan, estranged mother of the hero, Casey Sheehan, who died in Iraq trying to help his wounded comrades, has made a career out of lending aid and comfort to our enemies. She has been a willing pawn of the radical left wing. Her celebrated retirement earlier this year ended this month when she decided to mount a “Walk for Humanity” (In which she hasn’t walked a mile) from Crawford, TX, to New York City.
The Gathering of Eagles has met her every step of the way. We mounted counter protests at Ft. Benning, Georgia, Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlotteville, Virginia, Arlington, Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She retreated from many of those engagements.
We want her to know that we in New York support our troops and have nothing but scorn and disdain for anyone espousing treason who stands to encourage the enemy to prolong and intensify their actions against our brave men and women. We want her to know that the Gathering of Eagles and all our allies and friends will do everything in our power to shout truth to her seditious lies. We want her to know, when she leaves for her Mideast “Traitor’s Tour” next week, that Americans despise what she is doing!

From Blogs for Fred Thompson
On Hannity & Colmes tonight, Fred Thompson responded to Sean Hannity's question about what timeframe Fred is looking at to announce his candidacy for President -- Would it be soon? Hannity mentioned that July 4 and now September had been rumored.
Fred's response was a strong signal as to when. Fred said (paraphrasing) "August is a slow month - that would not be good". That, I believe, is Fred's way of telling us (his supporters) that he won't announce in August but early September is about right. He also mentioned to Sean that John Kerry announced in September in 2004 and won the Dem nomination.
So, reading between the lines, September seems very prominent in Fred's thinking. That will be just about right. As kids go back to school and vacation season ends, Fred will get greater exposure and people will be more attentive to what he says. Fred's doing it his way - and his patience tells us something about his strength and determination.
Border Agents Were Charged With 'Non-Existent Crime'
They are JUST NOW figuring this out? Haven't WE been saying this EXACT thing since the news broke way back when? Judas Priest! Some people's kids! Read the Cybercast blurb and then, at the bottom, there is a short reference to Judicial Watch's "findings".
Two Border Patrol agents whose prosecution and sentences to lengthy prison terms triggered a political storm this year may have been charged with a "non-existent crime," according to a legal brief submitted to a federal appeals court in May, and obtained by Cybercast News Service.
Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean are serving 11- and 12-year sentences respectively for shooting and wounding a Mexican national who was trying to escape after attempting to smuggle 743 pounds of marijuana across the Mexico-Texas border in February 2005.
Although they were convicted on 11 counts, the crime carrying the lengthiest penalty was for the "discharge of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence," a violation of section 924(c)(1)(a) of the U.S. Code. It carries a minimum 10-year prison sentence.
Cybercast News Service obtained a copy of an amicus curiae ("friend of the court") legal brief filed by Reps. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), Virgil Goode (R-Va.), and Ted Poe (R-Texas) in the former agents' appeal before the Fifth Circuit Court in New Orleans.
They accuse the prosecution of "creating a purported criminal offense never enacted into law by Congress," and of charging Ramos and Compean with a "non-existent crime."
Simply discharging a firearm near a violent crime is not illegal, the brief argued, saying the law they were convicted under is not a law at all, but a sentencing factor used to help a jury determine jail time after a conviction.
The brief cited several cases as precedent, including United States v. Barton in which the Fifth Circuit Court ruled that "discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence" could be used only as a sentencing factor, not as an element of a conviction. In Harris v. United States, the Supreme Court made a similar ruling.
The brief argued that, for a 10-year sentence, a defendant must be convicted under the specific terms laid out in section 924(c)(1)(a) (see section).
This provision is applicable, the section says, to "any person who, during and in relation to any crime of violence or drug trafficking crime ... uses or carries a firearm, or who, in furtherance of any such crime, possesses a firearm ..." If, and only if, these conditions apply can a defendant be sentenced to ten years in prison for the "discharge" of a firearm.
The brief argued that the shooting of drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila was not "in relation to" the drug crime because Ramos and Compean were themselves not participants in the drug crime.
Furthermore, Border Patrol Agents are authorized to carry and use firearms as law enforcement officers.
"By narrowing the issue to the discharge of the firearm," the brief said, "the prosecution and the trial court actions adversely affected the fairness of the entire trial, depriving defendants of any opportunity to present to the jury that they were using and carrying their firearms during and in relation to their employment as Border Agents."
The brief also criticized the prosecution.
"The criminal code cannot be treated by the prosecution as a legal chameleon, changing elements to fit the circumstances of the case that the government, in its discretion, wants to present to the judge and jury," it said.
One of the brief's authors, Larry Pratt of Gun Owners for America, told Cybercast News Service that this case could set an alarming precedent under which any law enforcement officer who fired a gun at the scene of a drug crime could be prosecuted under Section 924(c).
He also criticized U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, the lead prosecutor in the case.
"What [Sutton] was apparently trying to do is avoid the little detail that there was no underlying crime of carrying a gun because [Ramos and Compean] were authorized to carry guns," Pratt said. "So I think he tried to slide around and use the sentencing provision as an underlying crime."
'Perverse'
Rep. Jones conceded in a statement that Ramos and Compean may have been guilty of violating Border Patrol policy by shooting Aldrete-Davila and failing to file a subsequent report.
But Jones also blasted Sutton, saying the prosecutor "had no business charging [Ramos and Compean] with a crime that Congress clearly designed to apply only to the individuals who are possessing, using, or carrying firearms for the purpose of facilitating the commission of a crime - not to federal law enforcement agents."
"How perverse it is that this statute is now being used against law enforcement officers who were trying to stop drug trafficking," he added.
Sutton told the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 17 that it was his trial team that made the decision to bring the "discharge of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence" charge, and that he was not consulted on the issue.
"We have a deliberative process that goes on inside our office that I cannot describe," he said.
Sutton could not be reached for comment, and his spokeswoman said she did not think anyone else in the office would comment on the brief until it responds to the appeal in early August.
Asked about the appeal, Pratt said he was worried that it may be denied because the cited evidence had not been presented previously.
"The thing that concerns me most is that, because [the alleged misuse of Section 924(c)] wasn't brought up at the first trial, the Fifth Circuit Court could play legal games and say, well, too bad," he said.
Still, Pratt described himself as "hopeful" and warned that Sutton's tactics would eventually catch up with him.
"[Sutton] can only hide in the tall grass for so long and, Lord willing, the lawnmower's on the way in," he said.

Was U.S.-Mexico Deal Behind Border Patrol Convictions?
Judicial Watch was in federal court this week in its ongoing effort to obtain potentially damaging information from the U.S. government regarding Mexico’s role in the conviction of two U.S. Border Patrol agents who shot an illegal immigrant drug smuggler.
Just days after the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing over the veteran agents’ controversial imprisonment, Judicial Watch was in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to ask a judge to force the government to release the documents relating to the 2005 incident.
In January Judicial Watch filed a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with three federal agencies—Homeland Security, Department of Justice and State Department—but none has bothered to respond so Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit and a judge ordered this week’s hearing.
John Doe "Loophole"

That's the GOP's concession to the concerns of Bennie Thompson and the Democrats that people would use their "John Doe" immunity to go around making all sorts of paranoid claims. In essence, it leaves things in the hands of the jury: if a passenger is sued for making a report and the jury decides that their suspicion was reasonable, the passenger is immune. If not, no immunity.
So, you ask, what is sooooooooooo bad about having to make this concession to the Democrats?

They continue to put us, here at home, at risk, to pander to people with known terror ties.
Once again proving how weak and pathetic they are on National Security.
So yes, we got our John Doe Amendment, but as China and Russia are the weak links in the UN to any meaningful sanctions against Iran, the Democrats in our country are the weak links to any meaningful legislation meant to protect us.
Pathetic.

No...Freedom Isn't Free
As I read the Leftinistra blogs and read the Leftinistra press; as I hear the Leftinistra Lame Stream Media air their unqualified opinions; as I listen to the Leftinistra on CSPAN prattle on and on about the non-issue of the day; I often wonder why I and others have served only to have that which we fought for, bled for and died for pissed away by some freckled pimple faced shithead from code pinko and similar groups.
I often wonder what I would actually do if I ever had any number of them in my cross-hairs. Would I do the deed? Or would I merely snicker at the possibilities?
I suppose that it really isn't their fault being as ignorant as they so choose to be. Their parents did a lousy job teaching patriotism; if they had any parenting to speak of.
As my son soon deploys into harms way, I often reflect back at what caused me to serve and to deploy into harms way. As my Dad used to say, "A man has to do what a man has to do."
As my son prepared himself to enlist, he would ask questions of me and the conversation would inevitably lead to him asking me what he should do. My answer? A man has to do what a man has to do.
It took him 3 years to make his own decision. He read the same things I did and listened to the same things I did and upon many occasions, our opinions differed. In the end, he enlisted, survived Boot Camp, graduated, and was assigned to Ft Campbell with the 101st Airborne.
His further training was intense as though of us remember it was. Sometimes I think the training these days is not as intense due to the PC morons that have infected the rank and file.
He is now deploying is just a mere time remaining until we see him again and with God's help, we will. If not, we will see him in the next life.
As I was contemplating this post, written not to anyone in particular; just venting my thoughts as a father should at a time as this and in days like these, I was drawn to the following letter written by a man who's son was KIA by an IED:

We often hear this term: Freedom isn't Free. But, what does that really mean and if Freedom isn't Free, then what is the cost and who pays it?The cost is watching someone you love go away for a long period of time where there is little contact as they endure the rigors and hardships of training.
The cost is watching someone you love serve for pay that doesn't always cover what it takes to live a standard of living most civilians enjoy and suffering a financial impact that can negatively alter a military family's prosperity for a lifetime.
The cost is deployment to combat.
The cost is a loved one leaving whole but coming home less than whole, physically, mentally or both.
The cost is a a loved one who never returns from a mission and is never found.
The cost is having to take another's life, even if they are the enemy, and living with that the rest of your life.
The cost is watching a close friend die, maybe even holding them in your arms, helpless to save them and living a life of remembering that moment and feeling guilty that it wasn't you who died instead of the close friend.
The cost is a family waiting and watching 24 / 7, hoping and praying as they watch daily newscasts about our military personnel dying.
The cost is a knock at the door no family wants but is a special privilege of sacrifice and if not borne by some, then who would bear it?
The cost is a lifetime of love.
Freedom isn't Free and the cost is high.
The Fourth of July is a special time to celebrate the freedoms we have, hard fought and won at a great cost. Well we all should enjoy this day, and every day we have to live free, for to do less would be to waste the high price paid that we might.
