BAGHDAD -- Bombings, sectarian slayings and other violence related to the war killed at least 1,773 Iraqi civilians in August, the second month in a row that civilian deaths have risen, according to government figures obtained Friday.
In July, the civilian death toll was 1,753, and in June it was 1,227. The numbers are based on morgue, hospital and police records and come from officials in the ministries of Health, Defense and the Interior. The statistics appear to indicate that the increase in troops ordered by President Bush this year has done little to curb civilian bloodshed, despite U.S. military statements to the contrary.

Nearly 11,000 people were evacuated Thursday from Torre Mayor, Mexico City's tallest, ritziest tower, after a terrorist called in a car bomb. The device, which Mexican investigators called "artesanal," was easily dismantled. But the unprecedented evacuation echoed the disruptions Manhattan has seen as an al-Qaida target since 1993.
An obscure group called EPR claimed credit the next day, but it doesn't seem to be linked with global terrorist networks. There's reason to worry, however, that it will be.
EPR's strategy resembles al-Qaida's in that the target wasn't some quaint adobe, but rather Mexico's starkest symbol of global capitalism, its equivalent of New York's World Trade Center.
Completed in 2003 at a cost of $280 million, Torre Mayor is a glittering glass skyscraper in the financial center with 34 multinational tenants including Apple Computer, Marsh & McLennan and First Data Corp. At 55 stories, it's the tallest building in Latin America.
It's also a Mexico City icon — a visible symbol of progress and development made possible by an invisible infrastructure of democracy and economic freedom. This, obviously, is what EPR's leftist fanatics really object to.
They issued a statement saying they intend to undermine the pro-free market government of President Felipe Calderon, calling him "a fawning fascist who insists on destroying" Mexico.
In that regard, Mexico needs to realize that its decision to move toward a developed economy — creating a middle class, raising living standards, privatizing state industries and trading with any nation that asks — makes it vulnerable in ways it wouldn't be if it had remained a socialist backwater.
In turn, Mexico must grow more proactive in the global war on terror and become more engaged as an ally of the U.S.
EPR may be just a pathetic little dish of malevolence. But its goals are not so small. Over the past year, it has caused significant economic damage by blowing up banks and natural gas pipelines. And now, Mexican officials fear the group may be aligned with Cuban agents, or in league with drug cartels, as happened in Colombia.
The fact that Mexican drug traffickers and smugglers can align with anyone is a dangerous glue that can affix EPR to far worse players — such as al-Qaida. And already there are signs this may happen.
On Aug. 14, the same day the car was stolen for the attempted bomb attack, two Iraqi men were arrested in northern Mexico with false passports heading for the U.S.
These arrests show that Middle East immigrant groups have already set up a rat-line into the U.S. with the Sinaloa Cartel, which controls alien smuggling routes around Arizona.
U.S. intelligence says the number of Iraqis caught trying to sneak across the U.S. has tripled this year. In 2007, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted 178 Iraqi asylum-seekers vs. 60 in 2006. For every one that's caught, 10 others get away.
"We have intelligence about al-Qaida identifying Latin America as a potential or prospective area where they could come through," U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, told the El Paso Times.
Al-Qaida, meanwhile, has made threats of its own to Mexico. In February, Sawt al-Jihad, the terrorist faction of al-Qaida in Saudi Arabia, called for attacks on America's western hemisphere energy suppliers — Canada, Venezuela and Mexico. Osama bin Laden sees the crippling of the U.S. economy as critical to the defeat of the West, calling his strategy "bleed until bankruptcy."
Any of these groups can align to wreak havoc on Mexico's economy and try to turn it into a failed state, just as terrorists and their allies made parts of Pakistan, Somalia and Afghanistan into failed states.
The terrorists are striking because Mexico has made progress. A resolute Mexico can defeat them, but it must be willing to do so. Like the first attack on New York City's World Trade Center, the attack on Mexico City's Torre Mayor was a wake-up call.
I wonder if they can hear the voices...

Truth hurts. Is she saying she lied when she said: “Our forces are caught in the middle of an escalating sectarian conflict in Iraq, with no end in sight”? Is she saying she is ashamed that she said: “Our forces are caught in the middle of an escalating sectarian conflict in Iraq, with no end in sight”? Is she saying she was misquoted when she said: “Our forces are caught in the middle of an escalating sectarian conflict in Iraq, with no end in sight”?

Read Part 3
Cross posted from Right In A Left World
August 31, 2007
Whenever the Socialist Left has an agenda they desire to bulldoze onto the public, it becomes an instant ‘crisis.’ Contrary thought or evidence is ridiculed and seen as heresy. Witness this in the urgency of pressing and alarmist issue of “Global Warming.”
From what I recall in school, the earth has been undergoing a constant series of changes for as long as man has been on it and naturally, before. As the Theory of Evolution was introduced into school teachings, one theory I recall to explain this concept of man evolving from lower life forms was Climate Change.
If, as evolutionists claim, a change in the earth’s temperature is responsible for man’s existence, changes in the earth’s temperature have been with us since the earth was formed.
Saying the earth’s temperature change is a naturally occurring circumstance does not help further the agenda of the Socialist Left, though. So, a crisis of environmental concern is born that is used to further take from all to give to the elite Socialist. The crisis was tried in the 1970’s and failed. The public just didn’t buy into all the hype over Global Cooling.
Today the claim is that man, you and I, have caused massive changes in the earth’s temperature and it must be reversed. Reversed by us giving up our luxuries of warm houses in the winter and cool houses in the summer. We are blasted for driving larger and safer vehicles and encouraged to drive smaller more “fuel efficient” vehicles, or give them up all together and use the transportation we may be provided by localities. Doing so also deprives us of a basic liberty of freedom of movement, going where we want when we want. Our dependence on “public transportation,” which we subsidize through taxes as well as fares, places us where the ‘elite’ want us to be when they want us there.
In the 1990’s we were presented with the ‘Kyoto Protocol,” an international agreement to limit greenhouse gases by industrialized nations by 2012. Somehow, the bulk of responsibility and cost of this protocol falls upon the United States as other developing nations that pump pollutants into the atmosphere, most notably Communist China, are exempted. If enacted, it could have resulted in a 66% increase in gas prices, and up to an 86.4% increase in our cost of electricity, costing each American family some $4,000 annually
As goods and even food costs us more, we lose buying power and who better than our government to step in “supply” us with our staples, in the amount they deem proper. Socialism 101! Rightfully, President Bush pulled out of this flawed treaty.
While cries of we must give up our SUV’s and large homes, being told we are using more than our fair share, the Socialist Elite flies around from conference to campaigns in Private Jets and builds mansion after mansion. Pointing out they are not living the standards of life they wish to impose on us elicits a defense of their purchasing “Carbon Offsets.”
Exactly what and how a Carbon Offset works is sort of elusive, but the way I interpret is, some leftist think tank somewhere decided that we are a each entitled to ‘X’ amount of pollution. Since those of us who must work day to day, 8 to 5 jobs will never quite use the allotted pollution, wealthy leftists, who wish to pollute more may “purchase” some of our pollutant allowance to use as their own. The purchase money does not come back to us, though, it remains with the “Carbon Offset Company” quite often set up and ran by one of the very Socialist Elites demanding we give our luxuries up.
And, of course, they may retain theirs! After all, they worked hard and earned it.
As I said in part 3, we had an effective pesticide, Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane, better known as DDT. Lethal disease as Malaria was nearly a thing of the past due to it being used to kill malaria spreading mosquitoes around the world, especially in sub-tropical regions known for monsoon rains and excessive mosquitoes.
In the 1940’s and 1950’s, concerns were raised about its potential effects on fish and other wildlife. Enough alarm was raised and public fear and concern placed in a gullible public that the manufacture and use of DDT was banned nearly worldwide. It was replaced in most malarial regions by less persistent, and more expensive, alternative insecticides. Human life took a backseat to leftist ideology and disease like Malaria have been on the rise.
Much like the flawed Kyoto Protocol, leftist convened another convention in Stockholm to “protect humans from and the environment from persistent organic pollutants,” pesticides like DDT that have helped humans more than it has hurt. Some actually wonder if this isn’t Global Population Control.
Socialism relies on the British legend and myth of Robin Hood, one who always took from the rich and gave to the poor. Socialist would you have believe that is their intent as well. Take notice of just who is doing the taking and who from. A sizeable portion of the takings remains with the Socialists who sit over us in power as they reap millions of dollars off of our taxes to pay for their vacations, luxury homes, opulent offices, vehicles, aircraft and clothing. Note too than they miss very few meals while you and I must scrape to get by.
While they imitate Robin Hood, they hide that they are the rich barons that Robin would have been taking from and we, the working class, are the ones he would have given the spoils too.
With current Congressional pay averaging about $170,000 per year, why else would they spend millions of dollars they can never regain to hold the offices they do? Power, that is why. The power to create programs that perpetuate their seats and pass laws beneficial to themselves and at one time, exempt themselves from having to follow those laws they imposed on us.
In the 1800’s, a German Philosopher named Karl Marx wrote a series of books and articles that advocated a Liberal philosophy used by the Bolsheviks during an expensive and unpopular war and gave birth to the Soviet Union.
Individuality ceased. Profits ceased. Self-determination ceased. Religious freedom ceased. Everything went to the elite sitting in power over the masses and whom they determined should be allowed more. The elite controlled the media and filtered what the public would read or hear.
Vladimir Lenin enlisted the Bolsheviks to take control of the Socialist Democratic Labor Party. He was appalled at European Socialists support for World War One and in speeches, when he returned to Russia in 1917, urged peasants to take the land from the rich landlords and the industrial workers to seize the factories.
By 1960, after hundreds of thousands of citizens simply disappeared, we had Premier Kruschev declaring they would bury us.
Today, in campaign speeches for the United States Presidency, we hear, “We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.” We also hear, "The other day the oil companies recorded the highest profits in the history of the world. I want to take those profits. And I want to put them into a strategic energy fund that will begin to fund alternative smart energy, alternatives and technologies that will actually begin to move us in the direction of independence.”
Redistributing the fruit of someone else’s labor is not independence. It is enslavement.

LAS VEGAS -- Saying the coming weeks will be "one of the last opportunities" to alter the course of the war, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said he is now willing to compromise with Republicans to find ways to limit troop deployments in Iraq.
Reid acknowledged that his previous firm demand for a spring withdrawal deadline had become an obstacle for a small but growing number of Republicans who have said they want to end the war but have been unwilling to set a timeline.
I am convinced that Reid is mentally deficient and he needs to retire, step down or otherwise. He has become a Clear and Present Danger.

The White House faces growing opposition to the continuing U.S. military commitment in Iraq, not the least of which is from within the congressional Republican caucus. As the policy debate has intensified, both the president and his critics have invoked the specter of the war in Vietnam--in George Bush's case, as a warning against the consequences of withdrawal.
Although in many ways the analogy is inappropriate, critics of the administration frequently draw comparisons with the failed U.S. war in Vietnam to express their disillusionment over Iraq. On Aug. 22, Bush said the Vietnam experience offered the opposite lesson--that the public should not harbor any illusions that withdrawal would force "the killing to end." In fact, the U.S. experience in Vietnam provides evidence that the aftermath of withdrawal need not necessarily follow the direst predictions of those advocating a continuing U.S. commitment.
It can be argued that, as with Vietnam, it is the military presence in Iraq that is partly spurring the insurgency and providing a rallying point for anti-U.S. groups and jihadist forces in the region. Withdrawal may remove this focal point and cause some of the insurgency to dissipate, thus allowing greater opportunities for the civil hostilities to play themselves out and for Iraq to eventually stabilize and then develop politically, economically and socially. Yet, as in Cambodia, the enormous potential human cost of any "shaking out" period following withdrawal cannot be discounted.
For the correct analogy, I would go with this article. "The Left Loses the Vietnam War"
This article is written in English and is a very good read. The article ends with this:
So the twin pillars of the contemporary Islamist threat--al-Qaeda and the Islamic Republic of Iran--owe their origins to the collapse of American power in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. What new disasters wait to be spawned in the aftermath of a self-imposed defeat in Iraq?
Samuel Johnson is supposed to have said that nothing concentrates the mind like the prospect of a hanging. What will the American people do when they are required to meditate seriously, for the first time, on the full, concrete ramifications of a defeat in Iraq? What will they think when they hear Mahmoud Ahmadinejad boasting of Iran's eagerness to fill the "power vacuum" that will open up in Iraq after the "collapse" of "the political power of the occupiers"?
Will the American people--offered even the glimmer of a possible victory by the success of the "surge"--decline to repeat the painful history of Vietnam?
If they do, then the left will finally have lost the Vietnam War.
Read the beginning...it will not disappoint.

...and exposes its utter stupidity.
EN ROUTE TO NEW ORLEANS--Along with other New Orleanians, I've been amazed at the lack of alacrity with which both Republicans and Democrats have approached the problem of a federally caused flood that destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of homes, wrecking whole neighborhoods and communities, and spinning half a city's population into involuntary, semi-permanent exile. Now the answer becomes clear: the post-Katrina flooding just didn't destroy enough houses.

It seems as though Rep Baird (D-XX), is getting the Lieberman Treatment from the Moonbat Fruit Loop Brigade members of MoveOnDotTreason.
Jeff Hubbard, the retired California police officer who lost two sons in Iraq, spoke to reporters for the first time since the death of his son U.S. Army Cpl. Nathan Hubbard, who was killed last week in a Blackhawk helicopter crash.
Despite his family's devastating loss, Hubbard told reporters that his support for the country's campaign to combat global terror is undiminished. "We just want people to support the nation in what it's doing to make the world a better place," he said.
More and more Americans are stepping up and shouting down the former loudest of the loud. We are fed up, sick and tired and are no longer tolerant of the Hate America and blame America First mutants of our society. Dissent is one thing but openly seditious, subversive and treasonous acts for the sake of political gain is unconscionable. I just wish the PC Cowards in DC would actually enforce those laws. I doubt if there are any in DC with a spine left that is willing to do so...they WON"T even enforce our immigration laws for fear of fellow PC Cowards.
My eldest son will soon deploy to Iraq and I have made the commitment to join the Move America Forward Caravan and the Fight For Victory Tour. I don't have very many days remaining on this planet we call earth and I will be damned if I allow a repeat of the days of Vietnam. If verbiage, blogging and common sense fails, there are indeed other means.
Back in the late 1960's and the early 1970's, I was TOLD to stop what I was doing because the actions of the hippies, zippies and other such fools was merely a fad and this too shall pass. It didn't pass. Now, the OLDER hippies, zippies and other such fools are at it again but they have their stupid children with them now. It is indeed a target rich environment.
It seems as though the closer we get to the Good News from General Petraeus, the more the moonbats screech, whine and convulse.

Anti-War Agenda
Media: CNBC and MSNBC have refused to air educational commercials that support the war in Iraq. That's their privilege. And it's our privilege to point out the networks' rank hypocrisy.
The commercials were created by Freedom's Watch, a new tax-exempt advocacy group. Its $15 million campaign includes at least four ads it wants to run in 20 states through mid-September. They feature Iraq War veterans, some of them wounded, and military families, some whose loved ones have died in the war.
The goal is to provide a view of the war that old-line media don't care to report and to urge Congress not to give up on the troops.
So far Fox and CNN have aired the commercials. But CNBC and MSNBC won't touch them. Bradley Blakeman, president and CEO of Freedom's Watch, has written John Kelly, senior vice president for NBC News' network sales, asking why and requesting an "explanation of your basis in writing or station policy."
"It is our understanding," Blakeman says, "that the purported basis for the denial is a network policy denying access to groups that wish to sponsor advertising on controversial issues of public importance." Then he points out that that NBC has a "recent history of airing such ads."
There's been no response, but none is necessary. The real reason the networks are refusing is clear: The spots are at odds with their position on the war.
So much for "fair and balanced" and "no political bias here" garbage, eh?

BREAKING: John Warner to announce plans tomorrow
Sen. John Warner will announce tomorrow at the University of Virginia whether or not he intends to seek a sixth term, according to two top Virginia sources. Warner is planning a 2 p.m. news conference on the grounds of the Charlottesville, Va., school, where he took his law degree over 50 years ago. The Virginian will give his speech near the statue of Thomas Jefferson on the steps of the school’s famous Rotunda, adding a fitting Warner flourish to the event.
Warner's office has confirmed the announcement and his political organization has issued a press advisory in advance of the event.

While some Iraqi Army and Police officers searched for the suspected bomber, we searched for the bomb supposedly planted along this stretch. A culvert under a 4-lane road is a likely place.
To many of the Iraqis I’ve spoken with, terrorists are fair game. Kill them. But if we kill justice while doing so, we will create terrorists out of farmers. Here the Marines are creating farmers, police officers, shepherds, and entrepreneurs out of insurgents. To do that, they have to be seen as men who respect and honor legitimate systems of government and justice.

What kind of a name is Zell, anyway?
No matter. It "IS" what it "IS".
Since I last stood -- Thank you very much.
Since I last stood in this spot, a whole new generation of the Miller family has been born: Four great grandchildren.
Along with all the other members of our close-knit family -- they are my and Shirley's most precious possessions.
And I know that's how you feel about your family also.
Like you, I think of their future, the promises and the perils they will face.
Like you, I believe that the next four years will determine what kind of world they will grow up in.
And like you, I ask which leader is it today that has the vision, the willpower, and, yes, the backbone to best protect my family?
The clear answer to that question has placed me in this hall with you tonight. For my family is more important than my Party.
There is but one man to whom I am willing to entrust their future and that man's name is George W. Bush.
In the summer of 1940, I was an eight-year-old boy living in a remote little Appalachian valley. Our country was not yet at war, but even we children knew that there were some crazy men across the ocean who would kill us if they could.
President Roosevelt, in a speech that summer, told America "all private plans, all private lives, have been in a sense repealed by an overriding public danger."
In 1940 Wendell Wilkie was the Republican nominee. And there is no better example of someone repealing their "private plans" than this good man. He gave Roosevelt the critical support he needed for a peacetime draft, an unpopular idea at the time. And he made it clear that he would rather lose the election than make national security a partisan campaign issue.
Where is the bi-partisanship in this country when we need it most?
Today -- Today at the same time young Americans are dying in the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because of the Democrat's manic obsession to bring down our Commander-in-Chief.
What has happened to the Party I've spent my life working in?
I can remember when Democrats believed it was the duty of America to fight for freedom over tyranny.
It was Democratic President Harry Truman who pushed the Red Army out of Iran, who came to the aid of Greece when Communists threatened to overthrow it, who stared down the Soviet blockade of West Berlin by flying in supplies and saving the city.
Time after time in our history, in the face of great danger, Democrats and Republicans worked together to ensure that freedom would not falter. But not today.
Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today's Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator.
And nothing makes this Marine madder than someone calling American troops occupiers rather than liberators.
Tell that -- Tell that to the one-half of Europe that was freed because Franklin Roosevelt led an army of liberators, not occupiers.
Tell that to the lower half of the Korean Peninsula that is free because Dwight Eisenhower commanded an army of liberators, not occupiers.
Tell that to the half a billion men, women and children who are free today from Poland to Siberia, because Ronald Reagan rebuilt a military of liberators, not occupiers.
Never in the history of the world has any soldier sacrificed more for the freedom and liberty of total strangers than the American soldier. And, our soldiers don't just give freedom abroad, they preserve it for us here at home.
For it has been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag who gives that protester the freedom he abuses to burn that flag.
No one should dare to even think about being the Commander in Chief of this country if he doesn't believe with all his heart that our soldiers are liberators abroad and defenders of freedom at home.
But don't waste your breath telling that to the leaders of my Party today. In their warped way of thinking America is the problem, not the solution.
They don't believe there's any real danger in the world except that which America brings upon itself through our clumsy and misguided foreign policy.
It is not their patriotism -- it is their judgment that has been so sorely lacking.
They claimed Carter's pacifism would lead to peace -- they were wrong.
They claimed Reagan's defense buildup would lead to war -- they were wrong.
And no pair has been more wrong, more loudly, more often than the two Senators from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.
Together, Kennedy/Kerry have opposed the very weapons systems that won the Cold War and that are now winning the war on terror.
Listing all the weapon systems that Senator Kerry tried his best to shut down sounds like an auctioneer selling off our national security. But Americans need to know the facts.
The B-1 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, dropped 40% of the bombs in the first six months of [Operation] Enduring Freedom.
The B-2 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered air strikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Hussein's command post in Iraq.
The F-14A Tomcats, that Senator Kerry opposed, shot down Khadifi's Libyan MIGs over the Gulf of Sidra.
The modernized F-14D, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered missile strikes against Tora Bora.
The Apache helicopter, that Senator Kerry opposed, took out those Republican Guard tanks in Kuwait in the Gulf War.
The F-15 Eagles, that Senator Kerry opposed, flew cover over our Nation's Capital and this very city after 9/11.

I could go on and on and on: Against the Patriot Missile that shot down Saddam Hussein's scud missiles over Israel; against the Aegis air-defense cruiser; against the Strategic Defense Initiative; against the Trident missile -- against, against, against.
This is -- This is the man who wants to be the Commander in Chief of our U.S. Armed Forces?!
U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?!
Twenty years of votes -- Twenty years of votes can tell you much more about a man than twenty weeks of campaign rhetoric.
Campaign talk tells people who you want them to think you are. How you vote tells people who you really are deep inside.
Senator Kerry has made it clear that he would use military force only if approved by the United Nations.
Kerry would let Paris decide when America needs defending. I want Bush to decide!
John Kerry, who says he doesn't like outsourcing, wants to outsource our national security.
That's the most dangerous outsourcing of all.
This politician wants to be leader of the free world. Free for how long?
For more than twenty years, on every one of the great issues of freedom and security, John Kerry has been more wrong, more weak, and more wobbly than any other national figure. As a war protestor, Kerry blamed our military. As a Senator, he voted to weaken our military. And nothing shows that more sadly and more clearly than his vote this year to deny protective armor for our troops in harms way, far-away.
George W. Bush understands that we need new strategies to meet new threats.
John Kerry wants to re-fight yesterday's war.
President Bush believes we have to fight today's war and be ready for tomorrow's challenges.
President Bush is committed to providing the kind of forces it takes to root out terrorist -- no matter what spider hole they may hide in or what rock they crawl under.
George W. Bush wants to grab terrorists by the throat and not let them go to get a better grip.
From John Kerry, they get a "yes-no-maybe" bowl of mush that can only encourage our enemies and confuse our friends.
I first got to know George W. Bush when we served as governors together. I admire this man. I am moved by the respect he shows the First Lady, his unabashed love for his parents and his daughters, and the fact that he is unashamed of his belief that God is not indifferent to America.
I can identify with someone who has lived that line in "Amazing Grace," "Was blind, but now I see," and I like the fact that he's the same man on Saturday night that he is on Sunday morning.
He is not a slick talker but he is a straight shooter, and where I come from deeds mean a lot more than words.
I have knocked on the door of this man's soul and found someone home, a God-fearing man with a good heart and a spine of tempered steel -- the man I trust to protect my most precious possession: my family.
This election will change forever the course of history, and that's not any history. It's our family's history.
The only question is how. The answer lies with each of us. And like many generations before us, we've got some hard choosing to do.
Right now the world just cannot afford an indecisive America. Fainthearted, self-indulgence will put at risk all we care about in this world.
In this hour of danger our President has had the courage to stand up. And this Democrat is proud to stand up with him.
Thank you.
God Bless this country and God Bless George W. Bush.
Just thought I'd throw this back at the Leftinistra now that quite a few of their number are jumping ship...
