Whitewashing The American Indian

At the Plimoth Plantation this year they're laying down some rules.

(CNSNews.com) – A nine-year-old girl was recently asked to remove her “Indian” costume before entering the Wampanoag Homesite of the Plimoth Plantation, a historical site that allows visitors to experience Plymouth, Mass., as it was in the 17th century.

The nine-year-old was one of thousands who flock to the colonial museum during the Thanksgiving season. She dressed as an Indian and her friend dressed as a pilgrim to celebrate the occasion.

Linda Coombs, associate director of the Wampanoag Indigenous Program, asked the girl to remove her homemade beaded costume before visiting the site, reducing the child to tears and upsetting her mother, the Boston Globe reported on Nov. 24.

“Native people find it offensive when they see a non-native person dressed up and playing Indian. It’s perceived as us being made fun of,” Coombs told CNS News.com.

“Costumes are offensive because of what has happened in history – the Hollywood pseudo Indians, the Italian actors playing Indians, the crappy dress they put them in, the Halloween costumes. When other people dress up as Native people it’s offensive, period,” Coombs said.

She compared people wearing Native American costumes to white entertainers who put on blackface in old minstrel shows.

Visitors to the Wampanoag home site are asked not only to refrain from dressing up like “Indians” – they are asked not to use words like “how” or “chief” or “squaw.”

Cultural sensitivity requests are posted on signs in front of the museum and on their Web site, plimoth.org.

The Web site also advises visitors not to refer to the Wampanoag people as either Indians or Native Americans. “The term Native American suggests that Native People were always American but this country was populated by Native People long before it was called America,” the site states.

Instead, they prefer to be called Native People or Indigenous People.

Guests are asked not to engage in stereotypical “Indian” behavior, such as war-whooping and dancing around the fire.

The museum also requests that people not ask questions like, “Are you a real Indian?” Not just because of the word “Indian,” but because of the world “real.”

“The tour guides here are real people, Native people. Our nationalities are not fodder for joke material, because then you get into the aspect of racism and historical erasure,” Coombs said.

Most people have no idea that what they say or wear might be hurtful, insulting or offensive, she said.

“That’s why we’re trying to educate people about our culture and to correct stereotypes and wrong information,” she said. “We’re here to make a bridge between people, not to just send them packing.”

The movement to ban Indian imagery from sports teams and mascots, from dressing up at school or at Halloween as a noble savage, or banning words that might offend the sensitive nature of native Americans is what I'd expect of those who are trying to eradicate any memory of the stone age culture Europeans found on America's shores. Consider this - No one walks around in a Nazi uniform or in the striped rags of a Holocaust survivor because it is universally accepted that there is nothing redeeming in either symbol, they're both considered representations of evil and tragedy, respectively. Any nine year old wearing a costume resembling either would be forced into lifelong counseling and Child Protective Service agents sent to their homes. Would a Nazi interpret the sight of a child dressed in a Nazi costume as an insult? Or would he see it as honoring Nazism simply because the child chose to wear it in public despite the public condemnation? Likewise a Holocaust survivor? There is no doubt that Indian activists like Linda Coombs want America to interpret the relationship between the Pilgrims and the Indians as the same between the Nazis and their victims - but there is no comparison, and certainly no collective acceptance of that interpretation. There was no Holocaust, and no genocide. There's no consensus that Indians represent anything other than courage and wisdom, and to many, victims. Americans honor Indians when they name their sports teams after them, or don costumes, or appeal to native virtues ascribed to Indians. If anything, popular culture has whitewashed the nature of the Indian.

The brutality of Indians began long before European adventurers arrived, when Indians murdered, raped and enslaved other Indians in a long and wide ranging 'civil' war that raged on the continent. In the clash of civilizations that ensued after settlers arrived here, who started the atrocities matters little - the horrors made real were committed by both sides. That we've made native Americans into passive, nature worshiping environmentalists preaching respect and love is a concoction that couldn't be applied to anything remotely human. It was done by modern Americans to patronize and idealize the natives so they could serve as political props in a movement seeking to entrench multiculturalism. Re-writing history to suit the vanquished is as bad as re-writing history to glory in the deeds of the victors; the truth becomes the victim of self-serving interests.

But since we're in an age that takes serious the exercise of both demanding freedom of expression and then using political correctness to ban such a thing, any proactive step to protect ourselves from untoward words, glances or insinuations should be a burden shared by all. So I've got a few demands of my own that I'd appreciate all Indians abide by from now on when I'm within their circle of influence. I'm not a white guy - I'm an Irish, German American who assumes a fine bronze color in the California sun. Being Irish, any mention of the "potato" brings bursting from my subconscious a repulsive cultural memory of the famine that propelled my family from those emerald shores, so don't mention it. Please also refrain from the wearing or mentioning of "lederhosen" around me as well - my legs are not as muscular as they once were, and the imposition of that word thrown at me destroys any vestige of self-esteem that the German beer I'm guzzling might have lent me. Of course, dressing in green, cursing while drunk and bragging about the size of your Bierschinkin may send me into a tearful rendition of "Danny Boy" that will make everybody cry.

You've insulted me long enough, and I'm finding it tougher not to take it personally. Now it's my turn to play the victim.

Recently, some Jihadis were arrested in Virginia and are being hold without bond. Good. I hope they get thrown under the jail and someone throws the key away. They claimed to be able to obtain missiles that could reach the Pentagon. Their defense attorney calls the whole thing mundane. Naturally. As far as I am concerned, if they are not American Citizens, what do they need an attorney for? They don't qualify for Due Process. The Infidel Blogger's Alliance has more.

Hizballah isn't supposed to have the weapons that they had in the last "war" with Israel but we aren't to be overly concerned. Are we? Just because they have 3 times what they once had shouldn't worry anyone at all. They might get one of those Derangement Syndrome syndromes. I mean, come on. It's only 42,000 rockets. It's not like they have an infinite number. And the folks that are "responsible" for making sure that Hizballah doesn't get these weapons surely wouldn't withhold information because they would be mortified or anything, would they? The UN. What a group of useless morons. I swear. Once again, UN Resolutions, this one being 1701, mean nothing to terrorists.

A few days ago we were warned that the terrorists were planning a huge attack which would dwarf 91101. People thought that it would be here in the USA but weren't quite sure. The attacks took place in India. I don't think the attacks dwarfed 91101 but I don't live in India so I wouldn't know how the Indians feel about it.

The attacks are oddly coordinated but some say there is no link to Al Qaeda while others say differently. No matter though. We are told that NYC should brace for Holiday attacks, primarily in the rail systems. So, I guess The One being elected hasn't changed the Global Jihad like we were told would take place. Humph!

And what in the world is going on in Minnesota or should I say Minnekstan? Somali Jihadis are leaving the USA and heading to where to do what? Join the Jihad in Somalia? Who would have thought that? Who is recruiting this young lads in Minnekstan?

I find it peculiar that since Obama has been elected, the terrorists are stepping up their activities. I wonder why that is. Could it be that The One is being tested? Naturally, Joan Walsh will pretend that she is one of those holier than thou cretins and whione about the testing period that Biden brought up but heh, Biden brought it up. Get mad at that moron. OK Joany? Apparently, Joany is thankful that Barack is being tested. I wonder if she is OK with the folks dying during the testing period. Idiot. Victory in Iraq and no attacks on the American homeland. But Walsh, like Brilliant at Breakfast and so many others, has no clue as to what's really happening in the world today, and what it takes to protect a nation while an arc of terror builds across the international architecture.

Our Embassy in Kabul has also been hit recently and I wonder why Karzai is offering the leader of the Taliban protection in exchange for peace. That's how the Taliban got into power in the first place. Karzai must be a Democrat. He doesn't learn from history either and just might be trying to reinvent the wheel. The Taliban say that they are not negotiating and perhaps that is due to the fact that 250 Taliban Jihadi scum bastards were taken out by 30 American Fighting Men. Poor Jihadis.
Iran and HAMAS have declared an electronic Jihad against Israel and I am curious to see how that turns out. Is it like a video game? Have you ever noticed that whenever there is a threat to Israel Iran is involved someplace?

Good luck to The One that has stated that he would speak to our enemies unconditionally as they proclaim that their end game will be the utter destruction of America and Britain. I wonder how that conversation is going to start off. Even Al Qaeda has seemed to have had an about face opinion of The One. Just like a Democrat. Did they have an epiphany after the elections?

And what about Al Qaeda buying used ambulances on e-Bay? Sounds like they are planning for something akin to the school bus scenario to me.

While Iraq's long winter is nearing an end or at an end, no thanks whatsoever to the American Democrat and moonbat trollop, Iran sets the dawn for being a nation of bigots. It seems that Zawahiri's racial slurs hurled at Obama had to be topped off by a Nation State. Iran now classifies Obama as a house slave. How quaint. Good luck "negotiating" with them fella. I wonder what folks are classified as when they use their own children as suicide bombers. They must be running out of men.

While we are on the subject of Victory in Iraq, Daniel Davis wants to jump ahead of the game and lose the war just in the nick of time. Sometimes I do worry about dweebs such as he. Iraq is a humanitarian success in spite of the attempted losses by our own democrats. They just cannot bring it to themselves to admit it because they would also have to admit that they were wrong. They cannot have that.

Iran, Jihad, HAMAS, Hizballah and scores of other groups are one in the same. The sooner the politicians will accept that fact, the better off the world will be. They talk about unity but will never have it unless they first embrace Truth.

“Two years ago, this day seemed unlikely – but the success of the surge and the courage of the Iraqi people set the conditions for these two agreements to be negotiated and approved by the Iraqi parliament,” Bush stated. “The improved conditions on the ground and the parliamentary approval of these two agreements serve as a testament to the Iraqi, Coalition, and American men and women, both military and civilian, who paved the way for this day.” [...]

So much for the failure of the Troops to make it possible for the FINAL political reconciliation to take place. Looks to me that the Iraqi political machine does a hell of a lot better than the American one. Ours is pathetic. What have they done in the last two years besides nothing at all?

So What Do We Do About It?

As some of us cling to our Bibles, guns, salt and light bulbs, the Nanny Staters are gearing up to infiltrate our every day lives and dictate to us what we need, what we do and how to do all of the above. They want to do our thinking for us and others are telling us that socialism isn't the problem while others are telling us that we will get liberalism until it oozes from every pore. So, what do we do about it?

Some of us are trying to get Obama to come clean about his birth certificate but, acting like the typical libtard that he is, he doesn't have the courage to face Truth. Truth repels your basic Marxist and Truth makes their skin burn. So, we will just have to watch him like a hawk and be louder than the moonbats and become just as obnoxious as they have been for the last 8 years. We cannot invent lies and pass them off as Truth because that is just wrong. There is plenty to nail Czarbie to the proverbial cross of Marxism with.

For example, his energy deal in regards to coal. We have to force him to make up his mind about coal and clean coal and we have to make sure that he and his sidekick are on the same page all of the time. His EPA stand has an odd resemblance to the USSA version of the Environment Gestapo.

We will also have to monitor the ever fluxing green light signals he is sending his Goon Squads via the social media. Apparently, the Change dot Gov site has a mirror site and the messages are clear. The message is the same as it was on the campaign trail...get in their faces.

I suppose we could find the silver lining in the dark tunnel of radical socialism rearing its ugly head or spend our time making fun of the inexperienced dolt. For some comedic relief, check out Jules Crittenden's "Stop Me If You've Heard This One" post. It breaks the monotony of the USSA. Or, you can recall the funniest (in a scornful way) five words the Marxist has stated so far: "A Government That Spends Wisely". That gathering of words is truly snort and gag worthy, don't you think?

We can start chronicling all of Obama's lies, waffling moments, and/or misrepresentations. We can start by reading this and then, add to it. Obama has decided to not cater to the gay crowd in regards to the military.

As Obama tries to usher in his Era of Global Equality, we will have to remind him that our individualities will not yield to Global Marxism. We will also keep this in his face at all times; socialism has failed every where it has been tried and that is historical fact.

We can also monitor the moonbats that claim Truth is fear-mongering. That should be a lot of fun especially in the area of 2nd Amendment battles soon to be fought. What these moonbats fail to notice is that it is they that promote fear-mongering. You know...Bush is Hitler without ever pointing out how that is and a plethora of other examples. Like I said, this will be fun. We will use Czarbie's own words against him because he has already given us two years of ammo, no pun intended. You know all those You Tube videos that were taken down because the Obama Goon Squads whined about them? I have the audio saved from about half of them.

We can also keep track of and monitor all of the libtard moonbats as they admit that they lied about President Bush and are damned proud of it.

We can also monitor the latest development where blacks are demanding that the Democrat Party apologize for their racism history and make reparations. If Obama utilizes his "blackness", I am curious as to which side of this argument he will take. I don't think he will be able to hold onto the usual tactic and take every side of every issue. Some are also wondering if the Democrats can get their KKK members up to speed and get them to shut the hell up.

We can also continue to hammer all of the voter and campaign fraud in favor of the most inexperienced politician on the planet to rise to the highest office in the world.

We can also keep track of how psychotic and narcissistic The One is and constantly remind him of it as well as bringing up the blatant media bias in favor of The One. Then again, perhaps the bias isn't there just because Obama's picture was the front cover picture 23 times in 2008 on the Time's cover page.

We can also begin the long journey of reversing that which has been done to our children for the last 50 years. We can start by making the List of 45 readily available and start preaching it like we mean it. I am tired of doing it alone. This will also require the elimination of "boiling frog socialism".

One of the largest fights we are going to have is this unconstitutional Nationalized Health Care thing. We will have to pay strict attention to that one. Then again, since when does a Democrat give a damn about the Constitution...federal or state?

I find it truly amazing that the idiots of his ilk actually think that the last 8 years has been like living in a prison. He proves that the emotional cannot be trusted to clean off their own bums and that the necessity to read and study the List of 45 is a must for every True American Patriot. Then again, to this cretinous moron Patriotism equals the overthrow of the United States Constitution. Hallman says that the country is in a mess and what the fool doesn't catch is that it has been the Democrat Party that is responsible for "the mess the country is in". Their idiocy over the decades has ushered in the age of socialism, a return to what President Wilson presented and what FDR brought to pass. If Hallman and his Gang of Dopes knew anything about history, they would know this. Unfortunately, their genre of history started in the year 2000 when BDS boiled over into the mental illnesses of the Liberal Mind. Here come the Russians.

The Russians have expressed their concepts as to how an Obama Administration can succeed so they offered up some carrots and those "incentives" include surrender to the will of the USSR Reborn. Some are calling an old-school communist remarks as the Nutty Russian and as I may agree with that assertion, the underlying intent of the outburst of one Professor Igor Panarin could come true seeing that the socialists in this nation have put into place the right formula for a break up of the USA. Through the cancers of multiculturalism, diversity (unity through disunity), political correctness and identity politics, the socialists have manged through time (see List of 45) to literally destroy the nation. They have been so good at this they can get away with it by blaming the Party that constantly states that they are taking the Higher Road. Look at their chosen candidate and prove me wrong. Mr Nobody, an illegal alien was placed ahead of everyone else and the One World Socialists such as George Soros promoted him knowing that he will bend to their will because he is an immature, narcissistic dolt and has no direction of his own. Mark my words, before long, Putin will be once again at the helm of the USSR Reborn.

The proof of this will come before long as Russia is actively aiding Syria and Iran with their nuke programs. Iran has announced that it has accomplished the break up of an Israeli "nuclear spy network" and the media is silent. Why were Israelis in Iran spying on nukes if Iran didn't have any or at least getting close? 5,000 operating centrifuges might be an indicator, yes? Even the IAEA says they will help Syria build nukes and we all know who they affiliate with, correct?

All of this was predicted and expounded upon months and years ago and the idiots in DC just plod along like they know something. They don't. But that doesn't stop them from pretending. Israel and Iran will tango and they will tango soon...perhaps before Obama the illegal alien enters the White House and begins his "rule". Israel has already asked for our help just a few days ago and has received positive affirmations.

We can count on Obama to betray Israel and this Nation to the will of the USSR Reborn and their terrorist networks they have been feeding, sheltering and arming for decades. The Cold War for them never ended.

The War On Conservatism Will Lose

Phonies. Where do the phony conservatives crawl out from? And, why are there so many of them? Sometimes I think they are the left over Reagan Democrats.

The screen shot to the left was taken from this post here entitled, "The Folly of the Phony Conservatives". I call them Fair Weather or Eeyore Conservatives but, phony works for me as well. The picture is the meat of the post but the entire post is a must read.

The Conservative Movement, just like any other great movement, has been infiltrated by the enemy and that enemy is ourselves. We let these phonies in the front door and now they are trying to kick us out the back door. We'll see about that.

So, when you hear an idiot saying that Conservative Talk Radio is to blame for the position the GOP is in, just laugh and spit. The premise is retarded. When you hear that the "religious conservatives" are the problem, you know beyond a reasonable doubt that you are dealing with a phony conservative. When you hear that the GOP has moved too far to the right in recent years, you know that you are dealing with a phony conservative or an escapee from a mental ward someplace. None of the reasons mentioned above are the cause of the current GOP position.

The reason the GOP is in its current position is because the GOP has abandoned the Conservative Principles that propelled them to the Reagan Era Conservatism. It was during that time the GOP was infiltrated by the enemy...democrats posing as Republicans and/or Conservatives. I say this because it follows the List of 45, plain and simple. The Democrat Party has long been converted to socialism so why not get the other Party and get a single Party rule in the United States? I would like for someone to explain to me the differences between the current GOP and the current DNC. I don't see much of a difference.

Take Susan Collins, for example. She is a RINO that thinks the folks on the other side are her friends. Friends don't stab friends in the back. Ever. Her friends tried to have her replaced and now she is whining about it. But, now that the elections are over, she is wondering if they can ow all get along. That is a phony conservative.

Mort Kondrake is another fool. He is one that says that Hannity, Limbaugh and Ingraham must go. What a flake. Them and others like them are the reason why the GOP hasn't fallen into lock-step entirely with the DNC. Kondrake. Dummy and Dhimmi.

The year 2000 was my wake up call and I have been yammering about the RINOs ever since. Others are just now waking up and John Hawkins explains it all here. I used to call them the Silent Majority. Now I call them cowards that stay home and whine instead of getting involved and making a difference. We are at war and we do not have time for baby sitting the weak. Monday IS The Deadline For Obama To Produce Eligibility

The issue is legitimate in spite of what James Taranto the Whiner wrote the other day or what John Hawkins wrote today. The reasons they give don't hold water nor do they pass the smell test when one gets into the nitty gritty. This is an issue because Barack Obama has made it an issue. He can put this all to bed by producing his birth certificate and not a COLB. They are not the same thing. The COLB was proven to be a forgery and that is why it has been removed from the KOS and Obama web sites.

The NIN is tracking this issue as are WND, Atlas Shrugs and many others. Some are asking, "What's there to discuss? A newspaper clipping and the Hawaiian officials have stated that Barack was born in Hawaii." We are to believe the press and officials? Sorry. That is all heresay. An official birth certificate would put this issue to bed and I wish Obama would produce it because all I want is the Truth. It's as simple as that.

Atlas Shrugs asks, "HOW COULD STANLEY ANN DUNHAM HAVE DELIVERED BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA JR. IN AUGUST OF 1961 IN HONOLULU, WHEN OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON RECORDS SHOW HER 2680 MILES AWAY IN SEATTLE ATTENDING CLASSES THAT SAME MONTH?" Good question. It is because of these "disparities" that lends credence to the concerns we have. Perhaps the detractors from this argument shouldn't comment when they haven't fully investigated this issue. I was once one of those detractors until I looked into this for myself.

When Barack's family members say he was born in Kenya and the Kenyan government confirms it, what are we to think? Whatever the detractors want us to? Not hardly. RINOs do that.

More Bail Out Socialist Take Over Of The United States Economy

I know I am only 53 years old and all but since when does government involvement in anything produce a positive result for Free Enterprise and Capitalism? Our Republic thrives when government concerns itself with the United States Constitution and lets We The People run our own lives. Rhymes with Clown has this to say, among other things...

War News Update: At Home and Abroad

Finally, here in the Dallas area we have some terrorist sympathizers and enablers convicted on 108 counts of aiding and abetting the enemy. Too bad they didn't apply Treason to the deal. I would pay to watch them hang. More than likely, I would organize a typical Texican Tail Gate Party just for the event. It only took 15 years. And when did the Global War On Terror start? 2001, wasn't it. Was that 15 years ago? Their affiliation with CAIR is still a bone of contention and perhaps things will be made clear during the next round of exposing CAIR for what it is. A terrorist enabling entity which is a Clear and Present Danger to this nation.

CAIR is "Rather" upset about this recent development and so expect more garbage from CAIR claiming bigotry, racism and other such idiocy. FYI, Islam is not a race so how it can be classified as racism when fighting Islam has always made me laugh at the fools that make such a stupid statement.

I have been fighting terrorists and terrorism here at home and abroad for several decades and I started that business in 1974. It all ended in 2004. That's a long damn time. However, the war isn't over and it won't be over until we stop granting United States Constitutional rights to non US citizens. There is no where in our Constitution that authorizes or grants foreign nationals with American Constitutional rights. No where. I have studied the document for many years and haven't found it yet. Last summer when this trial hit a glitch, the area Jihadi and Haji scum threatened violence if it went on. Must have something to do with that Shar'ia Law thing. There were similar billboards such as the one above in the Dallas area and the Jihadi scum whined about it. I find it curious that they whine about "free speech" when that speech is directed in their direction as criticism but when they criticize others, they are offended when others utilize "free speech" they don't agree with. Democrats and terrorists...same-same double standards.

After approximately 8 years of lying about President Bush and the War, NBC releases a video of a 911 hijacker being coached/trained by Al Qaeda members. I thought that was kind of "ironic" that it took this long for the media to "find out" what we have known from the onset. Some might find it peculiar. When I saw the video, all I said was "It figures". President Bush is a lot of things but he didn't deserve the treatment he has received. However, he did bring it upon himself or his advisers were just plain stupid.

One of the many fronts on the war here at home will be this guy Holder that may or not make the grade. It seems that back in 2002 he said that terrorists were not POWs and are not afforded the Geneva Convention "protections" that a normal combatant is afforded. Czarbie doesn't think that way and neither do folks that do not understand the Geneva Convention if they have even ever read it...as I have many times. It was one of my duties to know the document.

Another front here at home has been won recently by a Second Circuit court ruling that 4th Amendment warrants do not apply for overseas ops. It is about time someone saw that overseas is not home soil. That is one of those "DUH" moments.

Another "DUH" moment is a recent report from intelligence services that Al Qaeda is a lot closer to obtaining a dirty nuke than previously thought. Maybe the FBI/CIA/DIA/DOD or DHS/MI6 should hire me because I knew this two years ago and the reason Al Qaeda didn't use the stuff they had was because they feared US reprisals. Under a weak-kneed and thin-skinned Marxist Obama, they won't have those kinds of apprehensions. Czarbie won't do anything because after all, we didn't empathize enough for the poor terrorists. He stated that 8 days after 91101...remember? Blame America First is that idiot's mantra. We will be hit again under Czarbie if he makes it to the White House.

Now, if there was a bailing out I would support, the GOP would be a good place to start. We can start by ignoring, flogging, excommunicating and evicting from the GOP the likes of Mort Kondrake. The guy is a fruit loop and always has been. He more than likely thinks that the GOP has gone too far to the right. He suffers from CDS...Conservative Derangement Syndrome. If anyone thinks that the GOP has moved to the right since Ronald Reagan they are seriously suffering some sort of mental collapse.

The GOP is in dire need of a bail out and only True American Patriots will be able to pull that off. The question is this: will they have the courage to do so? I doubt it. They have been cowering under the feigned attitude of "let the liberals destroy the nation so we can come back into power as a natural event". I hate and loathe such fools. Tell EPA Where to Go!

The EPA is considering green house gas regulations that will cripple the economy and reduce the food supply. We have two choices.

1. Fight the proposed regulations before they are passed into law.
2. Rise up in rebellion; a second American Revolution.

Because I prefer the first choice, I visited the American Energy Alliance and sent an email to the EPA arguing against the Socialist idiocy.

EPA wants to increase the price of gasoline, electricity, and anything that uses oil, coal, or natural gas by regulating eighty-five percent of the energy we use in America. You only have until Friday to let EPA know that you think this plan should be stopped dead in its tracks—click here to send your message.

I am writing in response to EPA’s Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) regarding the regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. EPA should not find that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare and EPA should not use the Clean Air Act to regulate greenhouse gases. To quote EPA Administrator Johnson himself, the Clean Air Act “is ill-suited for the task of regulating global greenhouse gases.”

EPA Should Not Find that Greenhouse Gas Endanger Human Health and Welfare

The ANPR seems to presume that greenhouse gases harm human health and welfare. There is little evidence for this claim and historical data show the opposite. Over the past 100 years, as temperature and greenhouse gas concentrations have increased, global GDP has increased 18 fold, average life span has doubled, and per capita food supplies have increased even as global population has quadrupled. What is more, these increases in human welfare have been due to economic growth, which necessarily went hand in hand with greenhouse gas emissions. Had such emissions been capped in 1908, human health and welfare would certainly have suffered during the 20th century. EPA should examine actual historical data to put the model projections into their proper context.

EPA argues the Clean Air Act is precautionary in nature. This is true, but EPA should not regulate greenhouse gases without compelling information that they are causing harm to human health and welfare. This information does not exist today.

EPA should be very cautious about inflicting harm on the economy through increased regulation because, as Lutter, Viscusi, and Morrell argue in their 1999 paper, every additional $15 million in regulatory costs leads to an additional statistical death. This is because regulatory costs impose costs on society that reduce income and in turn reduce expenditures on health and safety.

The regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act would cost billions, if not trillions of dollars, and as Lutter, Viscusi, and Morrell point out, lead to great harm to human health and welfare.

There is Profound Scientific Uncertainty Concerning the Impact of Increasing Greenhouse Gases on Human Health and Welfare

The science of climate change is far more unsettled than EPA explains in the ANPR. EPA should fully examine the state of climate change science. Here are a few examples of issues EPA needs to address and understand before it can accurately state that greenhouse gases harm human health and welfare:

• The leveling off of global temperature. Since 2001, there has not been a statistically significant increase in temperature, even as carbon dioxide levels increased by 4 percent during this period. This leveling-off of global temperatures was not predicted by the global climate models. It is true that the climate is a complex system with many cyclical variations, but each passing year with flat temperatures (in spite of rising greenhouse gas concentrations) renders the most alarming projections less and less credible.
• Heat-related mortality. EPA argues that warmer temperatures will lead to greater heat-related mortality. While this makes intuitive sense, EPA should examine actual data on heat-related mortality. For example, in the United States heat-related morality has decreased even as temperatures increased from the 1970s through the 1990s. EPA fails to consider the countervailing economic and health-related improvements that have caused heat-related mortality to fall as temperatures have increased.
• Worse air quality. EPA argues that "the IPCC projects with virtual certainty" that warming will lead to worse air quality. This is highly unlikely. Instead of relying on the IPCC’s projections on air quality, EPA needs to examine its own air trends website. The website states that, “National average air quality continues to improve as emissions decline through 2007.” These improvements have occurred in spite of increasing population growth, GDP, vehicle-miles traveled, temperature, and greenhouse gas concentrations. There is no reason to believe the air quality trends will reverse.
• Sea level rise. There is nothing new about rising sea levels. Sea levels have been rising for the last 10,000 years—since the end of the last ice age. The real question is whether the rate of sea level rise is increasing. Recent papers by Holgate, Berge-Nguyen et al., and Unnikrishnan et al. all show no increase in the rate of sea level rise. If increased greenhouse gas levels were driving sea level rise, we should see an increase in the rate of sea level rise, but that has not happened.
• A national solution will not solve a global issue. The Clean Air Act is not an appropriate way to regulate greenhouse gases because greenhouse gases are a global issue, not just an issue for the United States. We could reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to zero, but even this dramatic result would not have much of an impact on global temperatures in the long run. The vast majority of increases in greenhouse gas emissions come from the developing world, not the United States. National policies can give incentives for manufacturers to move their operations to unregulated regions, paradoxically leading to higher emissions to produce the goods in question.
• EPA’s models should be open and transparent. EPA should not use closed-source models for critical projections and modeling. All the models EPA references should be available for public inspection and download. EPA should also detail all of the assumptions and documentation for the models. EPA should not hide key assumptions and projections from the public.
• The ANPR has many legal problems. For example, EPA writes that it has the authority under the Clean Air Act to implement a cap-and-trade scheme for greenhouse gases. This claim is unlikely to pass muster with the courts. The DC Circuit, in the recent CAIR decision, ruled that EPA does not have the authority to implement cap-and-trade under the Clean Air Act.

Conclusion: These are just a few of the reasons EPA should not use the Clean Air Act to regulate greenhouse gases, nor should it make a finding that greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare. Although many climate scientists endorse man’s role in rising temperatures, there is no comparable consensus among economists, medical doctors, and other experts on the impacts such warming may have on human health and welfare. Indeed, poorly designed regulations could cause harms (in lost economic output) that far outweigh the modest benefits of lower greenhouse gas emissions.
